01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Housed around its own coffee roaster, BERTH COFFEE ROASTERY "Haru" in Sumida Ward's Yokokawa district offers a calm setting to explore the distinct characters of different beans. Each pour-over is brewed to order: the Ethiopia Wuri Natural unfolds with floral aromatics and fruit-forward notes reminiscent of strawberry and grape, while the Guatemala profile tends toward a gentler balance evoking nuts and crisp apple.
Espresso drinks are equally well considered. The café latte draws on rotating beans for a fruity expression where dairy sweetness brings out lighter nuances in the cup, with oat milk available as an alternative. Those preferring a leaner sip can opt for an americano, or order a concentrated, small-volume espresso to suit the moment.
The pastry case provides thoughtful pairings for the drinks. The carrot cake brings together sweet Japanese fruit carrots, 3 spices, crunchy walnuts, and pumpkin seeds beneath a tart layer of sour-cream frosting for a refreshing finish. Other choices include an anko canelé filled with Hokkaido-grown coarse red bean paste, and a fragrant banana bread dense with ripe fruit and toasted walnut chunks.
Opening at 8:00, the roastery works well for an unhurried morning pause or a quick takeaway coffee while exploring the neighborhood. The compact room, arranged with counter and bench seating, welcomes guests with dogs both indoors and out, making it an easy place to linger at your own pace.
